Responsible citizens participate, or take part in their social environments. SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS are places in which people meet to work or play in the community.

Some social environments in a community are parks and playgrounds. You have a responsibility to take care of places that you share with others.
If you see litter at the park, what could you do? You could make a sign asking people not to litter. You could also help by cleaning up the litter. It starts with you. Do not wait for the next time or the next person. If you do, it will NEVER GET DONE!

Community Leaders
A leader is a person who helps others get a job done. Some leaders are part of the GOVERNMENT or group of citizens that runs a community. Government leaders work to keep people safe and to keep order. Most community governments have three kinds of leaders. The MAYOR is the leader of a town or city. The COUNCIL is a group that makes decisions for the community. COURTS are another part of the community government. JUDGES are in charge of courts.

Choosing Our Leaders
Citizens in the United States choose most of their government leaders at events called ELECTIONS. They choose leaders they think will do the best job for each level f government. The 3 levels are local, state and national.
